Oh, marvellous…. and there was me thinking I’d left all this behind….

Kelowna Council will be asked Monday to pony up approximately $1.50 to $1.70 per household per year for on-board computers, software, data collection and data hosting services not included in the initial phase of the project.

In his report for council, Utility Services Manager Don Degen says along with collecting basic data, the system makes it easy for collection drivers to gather additional information that may result in further contact with the customer, or constitute an offence such as an illegal item in the cart, a cart in a bike lane or an overloaded cart.

Er…. “illegal items” in the cart?

Now, assuming they are still going to be unlocked allowing them to picked up and emptied, and they are still left at the roadside, what happens when someone walks down the street and decides to put something in the nearest bin, being mine, for example, not intentionally, but nonetheless “illegal”? What happens? I’m fined? It’s happening in the UK, so please, get your head out of the clouds….

Also, when you tell me it’s for all our benefit, making life “easier”, bear in mind that’s also what you told me when the radio transmitting water meters were installed, only to find out a couple of months ago that there were after all, ulterior motives….

Best Pals….

Found Merlin fast asleep on the floor, after a hard days mousing….

Best Pals....

Blogging has been a bit light. Not much has been happening….

Although, the big news, I’ve been “selected” to be the assistant football/soccer coach for the boy’s U14 team this year. We’ve had a couple of training sessions and a friendly, exhibition game against the U15 girls team…. who came out ready to take no prisoners….. but we managed a 1-0 win, with the boy scoring the only goal. The season begins proper in the Spring, when the league play begins leading up to the provincial finals in June, which we hope this year to through to.

Other than that, “work” has taken hold, websites have been built and some music has been made.

Two Brush Fires, in Kelowna….

Standard

So, after we had the Peachland fire a couple of days ago, an ominous plume of smoke strated rising on the horizon, on the opposite side of the lake, about half an hour ago….

Kelowna Fire

Kelowna fire department and Ministry of Forests crews are at the scene of two separate brush fires near the end of Lakeshore Road at the border of Okanagan Mountain Park.

Forestry has sent one attack crew and two helicopters.

The fires, described as rank two out of six, were called in shortly after 1 p.m. They are in the area of the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park Fire.

The nearest home is several hundred metres away, however, residents in the area are not being allowed to access their homes.  Residents that are in homes in the area are being asked to leave.  RCMP have set up roadblocks on Lakeshore Road at the entrance to Bertram Creek Park.

Winds in the area are relatively calm, coming out of the south at 17km/h with gusts to 37km/h.

More news, as we get it….

Peachland Fire, 11am…

Standard

The word is that the fire is now at 15 hectares, so it’s still growing.

And to make matters worse, some people are taking the logging roads to try and get round the Hwy 97 closed route….. then getting lost, stretching the RCMP resources further.

More news as I get it….

Adaline….

Standard

Doing a bit of tutoring in the Streaming Cafe a few weeks back and heard a CD they were playing, which blew me away….

So when I found out Vancouver based artist, Adaline, was coming to the cafe for a show, it was one we had to go to. If you want to see the show itself, head over to the cafe’s website and search the archive section. In the meantime, she has just released her first single.video. Enjoy….

Good, eh…. sure beats the crap you get fed on Pop Idol, that’s for sure. There’s talent out there, you just have to work a little harder to find it sometimes…..

The CD has been on repeat for the last few days now, with Holly belting out the song in the video.

2010…

Happy New Year to all and any who may find themselves discovering my ramblings….

Right, this year, no resolutions, just a determined effort to get a move on and make the year more productive than the last one, not to mention, the last 4 and a half….

December Sunset…

Standard

Caught the sun going down…

December Sunset....

…. bit like the temperature. We’re expecting -20’odd any day now. No snow though, which is odd for December in Canada… we now need the temperature to go up a bit now, for the snow.

The Birds….

Standard

“If you move it, they will come!”…

The Birds (1)...We’ve moved the bird feeder from the back garden, round so it’s in front our lounge/living room window. Just managed to catch them on their. Just before all pegs were full and there were others waiting in the tree for a go on it!

The boys were asleep somewhere, so the birds had some peace without Merlin bouncing up and down in the window….

It was also sunny when I took the photo, as I look now, bad weather is coming up through thvalley. Snow is forecast for later this week, so after much nagging, I finally got the winter tires on….

On the “homesteading” front, our new plan is homemade wine and beer! We’ve even got our labels designed ready. Bottles have been cleaned and are in storage as we wait for the first lager brew in aboutt 4/5 weeks. The wine selection is still to be decided upon. It’ll be red, but which one, we’re not sure. We tasted a ladies latest batch, having been laid down for about 6 months and to be honest, it weren’t too bad. So, fingers crossed, the Chateau le Boom could be on the way! If it goes well, th food bunker may be adapted to incoporate the wine cellar too….

On the wolf cub, sadly we missed out. A bit disappointing, but the original guy who had put down a deposit, decided he did want it after all. I have to say, the guy who was the breeder, was an almost limitless font of knowledge and was the host to beat all hosts, really nice. A glass of wine and a beer were handed out when we sat down, “I’ve had a tough day training dogs for the police. They can be a right pain. The people, not the dogs!” Still, as the kids said, it was an experience they will never forget, holding a cub, as the parents, timberwolves, wandered around us in the kitchen, flopping on top of us and slobbering all over us. “They’re not going to eat me are they?”, said Miss, as Simba decided, the huge daddy wolf, decided she was a comfy cushion and was spread across her lap. Poor little girl, she was half his size…. The next litter is due in the spring, so we’ll get our names down for one now…. we had a great name and everything…

The Birds (2)...

Goal!…

Finally, I managed to get one of his goal scoring breakaways. It’s only been, like, er, years….

You know what it’s like, too busy watching, shouting, screaming….

The Boys…

Standard

One of their favourite spots after a hectic mad chase round the apartment….

The Boys...

We’ve aquired a new kitten. Merlin. He and the rest of his litter were found in a box, covered with rubbish, waiting for the rubbish men. What some people can bring themselves to do never ceases to amaze me. I mean, let the sodding animal shelter have them if nothing else. But the rubbish men? Abusive words are itching to be written, but I will refrain, not that these morons deserve any less….

Anyway, the good news is, they seem to be getting on more and more, with Mojo acting like the big boss, tolerant of the new upstart, bounding around and nuzzling up against him in his basket. Until, he’s had enough, whereby he pins him down by the throat, amazingly, with no serious injury.

Speaking of the cats, I found this video we did, of Mojo at the fishtank. As with all fishing, it requires a little patience….

Now I just need to catch Merlin at it too. As I type, he’s bouncing round the tank in a similar fashion, as the fish glide obliviously up and down…..
